When you first use the Myopter to look at a book, there is a tendency for the eyes to converge. This will cause double vision. The reason for this is that the user knows that the book is close and automatically converges, The way to deal with this is to hold the book as far away as possible, pretend it is far in the distance, and relax the convegence so that a single image is obtained. Then bring the book back to normal reading distance while maintaining the single image. With a little practice you will be able to get a single image without this procedure.

To take the Myopter apart for cleaning or changing the lenses, just use a small flathead screwdriver to turn the four bolts counterclockwise. The four nuts will drop off. Then, just lift the top straight up, holding the device horizontaly so the loose parts do not fall out. The lenses and the front window can then be lifted out of the slots.

To check the device for proper alignment, remove the lenses and look backwards through it at a distant object, such as a light bulb. The two images you see should be close to each other. One should not be greatly displaced vertically from the other. Horizontal displacement is not as important.

To get maximum benefit in controlling or reversing myopia, the lenses should be selected so that you are reading at the far point. This means that when the viewed object is at its normal distance from the eyes, the print or other item viewed should be slightly blurred. This assures that the ciliary muscles of the eyes are forcing themselves to relax.

To avoid excess complication, weight and cost, the viewer was not designed to be adjustable for various pupillary distances. It was designed with a nominal P.D. of 64 mm and can be used by people with P.D.'s wider or narrower than this, and by children, without appreciably restricting the field of view. This does not affect the convergence, which is always zero.

On the strap model, the Forehead Plate has a strip of Velcro attached to the back with adhesive. To this tape it is possible to attach additional pieces of 1-inch wide, 3-inch long Velcro. Several pieces are included with the device for this purpose. Each additional piece of tape will increase the distance between the plate and the forehead and add more downward tilt to the device. Ideally, when looking through the instrument you should see equal amounts of the ceiling and the floor inside the device. It is also acceptable to tilt the device so you see more ceiling than floor if this makes reading easier. Hold the device up to the eyes and make this adjustment until you attain maximum reading comfort. The headband is then attached by pressing its midpoint against the Velcro strip on the front of the Forehead Plate. The two ends of the headband are then overlapped behind the head and adjusted for proper tension before pressing together.
